Chapter Ten

"Hello?" Tyler found himself relieved the moment he heard Michael's voice on the other end of the line. Even after Tyler saw and heard the way Michael reacted to the plight of Peanut he wanted to believe that there was something worth his interest in the shallow man. Right now, his safety was of the utmost concern and the rest of his feelings for Michael were inexplicable.

"Michael? It's Tyler."

"Tyler?" Ty could hear the happiness in Michael's voice. He suddenly wanted to be in the room with him, not on the phone. It seemed like he was so far away.

"It's me. Listen, Michael, the reason I'm calling is that there's been another murder in Texas. This body had a credit card receipt from your credit card on it. I am worried for your safety and I want you to get out of that apartment. You need to get away from there. I think Frankie may have something to do with this murder."

Michael sputtered on the other end of the line. "Frankie a murderer? Tyler, that's impossible. Thief I understand but Frankie wouldn't hurt me."

"Listen, Michael! I don't have any time for this. I'm calling because I'm concerned that you may be a target for Frankie. Once he realizes that he's left behind credit card evidence, he may come after you to try to silence you. After all, he has limitless resources and not a whole lot of brains, leaving behind as much evidence as he has. He may not think twice about killing you. I just wanted to warn you and ask you to go someplace that Frankie won't think to look. Please." Tyler could hear the pleading in his voice, not his typical style of dealing with people.

"Oh… okay, Tyler. If you really think that I'm in danger, I'll go. I'll just pack a few things and go…I don't know where… I don't have money for a hotel… well maybe a fleabag motel."

"I'll make reservations for you and call you back with the address, Michael. Please go pack. I want you out of there in half an hour."

"You… you'd do that for me, Tyler?" Tyler thought he heard Michael cut off a sob and it ripped at his heart. He squeezed his eyes shut and swallowed hard.

"Yes. Now, hang up and get packed. I'll call you back in a few minutes."

Tyler hung up the phone and made reservations at a chain motel in the neighborhood not far from where Michael lived. At least Tyler knew that Frankie wouldn't find him there. As long as Michael maintained a low profile, he'd be safe. Once he'd called Michael back with the confirmation number and address, he felt a lot better. He had just sat down with a glass of ice water when his phone rang again.

"Tyler?" Cody's voice asked before Tyler could even get a word out.

"Yeah, Cody. I'm here. What's up?"

"I'm flying out this afternoon. Do you think you can pick me up at LAX at nine thirty-five pm?" Tyler was a bit surprised.
